Help Us Seed the Commons: CC Research Internship

Civic Commons exists to help governments share technology, and over the next few months, we’re in the process of building a literal “Commons” — an online marketplace to connect government officials with the knowledge about the civic technology they need. We believe a robust marketplace can disrupt the way governments are currently using technology, making them more open, more efficient, and more innovative.

For the Commons to be useful, though, we need to have a deep understanding the civic technology currently being deployed by governments across the country. We need someone to closely look into the technology supporting our civic institutions — their backbone and nervous system — so we can seed the Commons.

And that’s why we’re recruiting fall interns to help.

As a Civic Commons intern, you’ll receive training and mentorship in civic technology from experienced civic hackers and policy experts, and you’ll have the opportunity craft a research portfolio detailing the tech infrastructure of dozens of governments around the world. More importantly, you’ll make a real difference building disruptive technology for the public good.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Research and identify key players and vendors in the civic technology space
  • Engage organizational partners to share their knowledge on vendors, governments, and technology
  • Reach out to government officials and understand their use of technology
  • Inventory leading civic technologies, detailing their deployments and functionality
  • Create and curate useful, interesting, and compelling content describing civic tech

We’re on a tight deadline, and there’s a lot of work to do. We’re looking for someone who’s entrepreneurial, driven, and motivated, and someone who cares deeply about civic life and how technology can enhance it.

Applications will be considered on a rolling basis. Please direct any questions to abhi@codeforamerica.org.

Note: The internship is unpaid, and while offsite applications will be considered, interns are recommended to work out of San Francisco or New York for at least 8-10 hours a week during the term. International candidates with the necessary paperwork to intern over the summer are welcome to apply, however, Code for America cannot sponsor work visas at this time.
